As evidenced by this blog, I do like words. Like, really, really like them.
I am by no means a grammatical wiz. I (almost) always misspell ‘surprise’ and ‘genius’. I intentionally fragment sentences for effect. And texting is all but ruining my ability to type a fully formed thought.
However, I still maintain I really like words. The internet has it’s pitfalls but I appreciate being able to instantly find out the origin of a phrase.
Recently, a text to a friend included “can of worms”. While it’s origin would seem obvious, why wouldn’t I look it up?
The evidence suggests that the original cans of worms were real cans with actual worms in them, collected as bait for fishing.
…
Fishermen have told me that the most annoying aspect of opening a can of worms is that, being live bait, they crawl out and are difficult to put back.
(From here.)
This leaves me thinking:
1) Worms. Ew.
2) Angler is an interesting word…
